I love these:
and it makes me think that abstract patterned teddy bears would do really well. Theres something about a familliar 3D shape covered in a pattern that doesn't coincide with any feature on the shape that makes it really easy to appreciate the two types of art - 2D and 3D - separately but at the same time if you know what I mean. Possible examples:
The point being I think that kids are the most important people in the world and they deserve our hopes and dreams - our art, and not our trash (violin swell).

Here's a Birthday idea for you: Idealized Organs. I've been trying to form the perfect 3D heart with my sculpy and I started to think about what all the other organs would look like reduced to their simplest shapes.

Hi Cherry Shana and Xuan - Here's another idea: put a life-size audio-visual "window to the world" in a busy downtown shopping district . This can be done pretty cheaply with one-way mirrors and web cams, or more expensively with virtual reality technology. I made a prototype with a sheet of mirrored foil, some corrugated plastic and a couple feet of duck tape. There are also lots of VR labs at Internet2 schools that develop applications around concepts like this. We could put a proposal together and shop it around to City governments or to big stores like the Coop in Harvard Square. Here's a diagram of the cheap way. No it still looks like two guys having sex with two robotic ostriches.

Bowling Barbie is fine. I especially like the two-colored shoe thing. A friend of mine was just lamenting the other day how you don't much see clothes colored differently on either side, except for tights from the middle ages, and now I guess - Bowling Barbie's shoes. And her skirt is fine too. I can see that that would suit you Cherry.
I think they should get statistics on what pictures people look at most on the web and then compare them to see what shapes people like the most, and then correlate them with search words to see what meanings the shapes that the people like the most, have. Then we would have a graphic language of shapes that everyone in the world would understand. Instead of sending weapons and money to the third world we could send our Porno-language! Knowledge would spread like AIDS!

Hi Cherry, thank you so much for that stigmergy site. I think you did send a link before. I think I sent you Emergence (put a dot in each corner and hit 'start'). One of the sections on the stigmergy site (chaos) reminded me of a half baked idea that is sitting in the corner of my basement. I wanted to make a chaotic magnetic-pendulum guitar: where the strings were held at one end just by electro magnets that you could control with extreemly high sensitivity (either physically with a lever or electronically by turning the juice up or down) - and that allowed the string to vibrate chaoticly like this picture:
I got the idea from this toy which you can play like a guitar if you set the magnets up the right way.
Xuan: my cool patterns are all in the "lots of little tiny dots" vein. I will scan some and put them up. Speaking of creating hand crafted meditative pieces through iterative processes, lately I have been walking with my sculpy and letting the back and forth motion shape it slowly over a long period of time. It makes me think that this is how 3D fabrication will work when they give up cross sections and 2D grids and start doing things in 3D curves.
If you hold your hand like you are praying and hold the sculpy inbetween then walking gives you an egg shape. If you loosen up a bit you get a sarcophogus shape. If you let each one of your finger pairs sink in a bit you get a perfect embryo with the tail curling around the heel of your thumbs, the eyes (?) around your pinkies, the nose (?) around your rings, mouth around your middles, and ears(?) around your indexes (indicis?). But if you really loosen up you can get any shape you want.
I'm all with finding ways to improve everyday objects. Why aren't computers put in wood shells?
In the 1910s record players were beautiful furniture because they were made for women. When women went to work after WWII record players got ugly. If the Wright Brothers had let other designers use wing warping, then planes would have gotten smaller and more elegant until we discovered we could fly without wheels and the design trend in record players would have continued and we wouldn't have had WWII or ugly record players, or Wayne Newton, or George Bush and or WWIII for that matter.
For minimalist music with beautiful melodies go to This Page and pull up the Jave Demo and draw on the picture of the volkswagen very carefully and thoughtfully. Make a pattern for some fabric.
